Personalized Kinder Surprise Gift - DIY Tutorial

It's not just the delicious chocolate that makes Kinder Surprises amazing, but it's also the actual surprise of opening the small container inside and discovering your mystery prize! Normally Kinder Surprises contain small toys that you build, but today we are going to show you how to maximize that element of surprise and excitement ten-fold by adding your own personal gift. The magical moment of opening a Kinder Surprise to find a personalized message/gift just for you is guaranteed to wow.

Items needed:

  • Kinder Surprise
  • sharp knife
  • hot water
  • a small gift/clue you want to put inside

Step 1: Remove the foil

Tip: Store the Kinder Surprise in the fridge for at least 10 minutes before beginning and use a paper towel every time you touch the egg. This will help ensure that the chocolate does not melt when you are handling the egg and that there are no smudges.

It's important that your loved one doesn't know that the Kinder Surprise has been already opened, so you want to make sure that you carefully peel off the foil covering the egg. The best way to do this is to use the back of the knife and gently lift the edge of the foil so that it is no longer pressed down along the egg.

Then, once the edge of the wrapping paper is lifted all the way along the egg, use your finger to gently separate the two sides of the foil and pull them apart.

Step 2: Open the egg

Warm the sharp tip of the knife in hot water and then apply gentle pressure along the seam where the two edges meet to open the egg.

Step 3: Place your surprise

Here comes the fun part! Open up the little container, remove the Kinder Surprise toy, and place inside your own personalized gift/message. Some fun ideas for things you can place inside the egg:

  • a sweet note
  • a key (that opens up a locked container where you've stashed a gift/next clue in a scavenger hunt)
  • a ring (a super unique way to propose!)
  • message in a small bottle
  • jewelry
  • a clue that leads to a next step in a scavenger hunt

Step 4: Seal the egg

Dip the knife in boiling water for about 10 seconds and then gently slide the flat side along the edges of both pieces of the egg to melt the chocolate. Place the container with your surprise inside and gently press the two sides of chocolate together to reseal the egg. The melted chocolate dries quickly so make sure you don't wait too long to press the two sides together.

Tip: It's not necessary, but if you want an extra strong seal for the Kinder Surprise, you can also melt plain white chocolate and spread a small amount along the edges of the egg before pressing the two sides together.

Step 5: Rewrap the egg

Take the two sides of the wrapping foil and place them around the egg. You want the Kinder Surprise to look brand new so make sure you take your time on this step to carefully press the edges of the foil back in place.
